Guidry's record-setting night helps Surge defeat Sin City in home opener

WR/PR Deana Guidry (#21) records the longest play in San Diego Surge history.

SANTEE, CA (04/22/2017) The San Diego Surge (3-0) came away with a 37-7 triumph over the visiting Sin City Trojans (1-2) Saturday night at Santee Community Stadium.

Deana Guidry found the end zone twice off returns, including a missed field goal ran back for a team-record 107-yard touchdown.

The Surge offense turned the ball over on its first two possessions, but a three-and-out at the Sin City goal line led to a 24-yard punt return by Guidry for the first score of the game.

Two possessions later, another Trojans' punt attempt would lead to a score, this time it was a bad snap going into back of the end zone for a safety, giving San Diego a 9-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

After a long drive, Sin City was forced to settle for a 25-yard field goal attempt, but a short kick led to Guidry's 107-yard return, giving the Surge its longest play in team history and a 16-0 lead with 4:41 left in the first half.

The game had to be delayed due to a Sin City player suffering a serious injury.

When the action resumed, it took the Surge just five plays to drive down the field and get its first offensive score of the game. Melissa Gallegos connected with Lorie Moore for a 13-yard touchdown, boosting San Diego's lead to 23-0 at halftime.

The Surge began the second half with an eight-play drive that ended with an 11-yard touchdown run by Adriana Gutierrez. The successful PAT extended the San Diego lead to 30-0 with 10:18 left in the third quarter.

On the ensuing possession, the Trojans ended all hopes of a shutout with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Ashley Eldridge to a wide open Maria Palacios-Rodriguez.

Jazzmon Stovall put the finishing touches on the victory with a two-yard goal line dive for the final touchdown of the game.

Next week the Surge returns home for what should be a highly competitive meeting with the undefeated Central Cal War Angels, who are fresh off a 28-19 win over the Los Angeles Warriors.
